NewGlass version 1.01
=====================
'Since time immemorial, we have suffered the injustices of a crap
hourglass..' [author unknown]
Distribution
------------
Freeware.. no restrictions so long as hourglass is not distributed/used for
commercial gain. If PD libraries want to distribute !NewGlass, send me a
copy of your latest catalogue and I'll send you the latest release, together
with any other bits and bobs I feel appropriate. Magazines.. go ahead, make
me famous and release !NewGlass on your coverdisc! 8-)
-> Ensure all files remain intact and unmodified in distribution <-
Overview
--------
I wanted an attractive hourglass defined in high-resolution to replace the
duff glass that comes with RISC OS. The sprites (35 in total) were designed
in mode 19, which possibly means the hourglass is unsuitable for low
-resolution monitors. I used a hacked-up copy of Jon Ribbens' !Hourmake
application, which initially barfed at mode 19 sprites. I have also
included a low-res version of the hourglass, called 'Hourglass8'. To load
this in preference to the high-res glass, rename the file hourglass in the
!Newglass to hourglss19, then rename 'hourglass8' 'hourglass', rerun the app
et voila.. :) Alternatively, just run the 'hourglass8' module. ;>
Note: the high-res hourglass *will* work on standard resolution monitors, at
least under RISCOS 3, but the hourglass will appear twice the vertical size.
The inspiration for the hourglass was taken from the static glass under
Windows on the PC.. not much cop. So this one does a full 360° turn about
the horizontal axis.. take every opportunity to demonstrate this to your PC
friends... :)
Currently, there are no percentage sprites, and thus percentage hourglasses
will just show as a normal hourglass.. not so bad, given that the percentage
animation tends to slow down the process considerably. Also, I still haven't
quite figured out how to allow the percentage animation to be wider than the
hourglass.. any help on this would be much appreciated!
Note: The sprites have been defined without a palette, which means you can
customise the colours by using the palette utility. A couple of palettes are
supplied as a guide, one of which auto-installs when the application is run.
Palette settings..
-> Click Select on the palette utilty, then click the relevant button to
change colours
M1 = Outline (looks best in black)
M2 = Fill colour
M3 = Sand colour
Installation
------------
In order to ensure the hourglass is loaded on startup, include the following
line in your boot sequence:
RML.System.Modules.Hourglass
having copied the hourglass module in the app directory into the modules dir
of your !System folder.
Updates
-------
-> New low resolution hourglass
-> Cuple of daft speeling erors corrected in orginal help file
-> Command 'OSCLI("Pointer on")' in 'Off' utterly redundant. Removed.
-> Reached conclusion that Proportional Representation is a pile of cack :)
-> *New* hourglass included in archive.. revision of hi-res glass..
now looks good at low-res.. another 9 animation frames added for xtra
spit 'n polish :) Corners now bevelled! Original glass renamed hourglass0
-> I've been unreliably informed that you lucky RiscPC users can't set up
your own palette files with the new monitors utility. So I'm generously
donating another palette.. (!Palette3). For all you fairy closet cases..
pastel purple/yellow :)
To do
-----
-> Include LED sprites and either percentage animation or numerals
-> Write installation program to merge with !System folder and check monitor
type in order to load correct aspect hourglass.
-> Finish off this bloody essay on electoral reform before my tutor cuts my
knackers off ;)
